Help the Hospices 9 Lakes in 9 Hours Challenge

19th June 2010
Lake District

Your mission:
To canoe Ullswater Lake, climb the third highest mountain in England, Helvellyn, and undertake a challenging bike ride back to base in 9 hours!

Terrain:
Hilly! Climbing over Helvellyn is predominantly on a worn grassy path up and down with a scramble across the middle. The bike part is a mixture of off-road (with dirt and gravel tracks) and tarmac.

Accommodation:
YHA Ambleside or Windermere, Lake District.

Weather:
Be prepared for all weather conditions and check a few days before departure!

Day 1: Friday 18th June
Participants arrive at the YHA accommodation in Windermere or Ambleside late afternoon. A chance to meet the rest of the teams before a briefing and evening meal.

Day 2: Saturday 19th June
After an early breakfast and briefing at the YHA, you will meet with your guides and then set off for the challenge! Please note that if the group is quite large it might be split into two with half starting with the canoeing and half starting with the cycling.

The Mountain Bike Ride
This is the hardest and longest section of the event. This section starts with adjusting the bikes and a briefing on the ride. The group start out from Ambleside YHA and finish at Wythburn car park with a refuelling stop at the disused quarry at Hodge Close. The route is a mixture of tarmac and off road with some challenging climbs and great descents.
Approx. duration: 3 hrs

The Trek
The route will be over the summit of Helvellyn (the second highest mountain in England). The starting point will be the Wythburn car park and the finishing point at the sailing centre on Ullswater. The route is from Wythburn car park to the summit of Helvellyn before finishing at Ullswater. Ascent of 803m and a decent of 764m.
Approx. duration: 4 to 4 ½ hrs

The Canoe
This will be undertaken in 2/3 man Canadian Canoes. The start and finishing point will be at the sailing centre at the head of Ullswater. The route will be up Norfolk Island then onto a buoy off Aira point and back to the start.
Approx. duration: 1½hrs

When all teams have completed the challenge there will be a celebratory toast of the group’s achievements. Participants then be coached back to the YHA to change and shower before we all head off for a celebratory meal nearby. Accommodation will be in the YHA.

Day 3
Breakfast will be provided at the YHA after which the group will return home
